Monthly Naval Intelligence Summaries, 1946-1954
This volume contains monthly intelligence summaries compiled by Naval Intelligence on behalf of the Naval Staff and Admiralty during the early years of the Cold War. The purpose of these summaries was to keep relevant personnel abreast of the political, diplomatic, and military situation. Although secret, they were intended to be read by all commanding officers and distribution was arranged as such. Each summary is divided into four sections: section one is usually a brief editorial commentary on the international situation; section two consists of naval intelligence reports organised alphabetically by country; section three includes articles on subjects thought to be of interest to officers; and section four comprises political intelligence reports, again organised alphabetically by country. Perhaps not surprisingly, much of the content is concerned with the Soviet Union and its influence on the world stage. Events such as the Korean War and Berlin blockade are analysed in great detail, while the nuclear arms race also features heavily.
