Sierra Leone, 1808–1919
This volume consists of gazettes published in Sierra Leone between the years 1808 and 1919. Between 1808 and 1870 the publication of this gazette depended on the will of the governor. Thus, gazettes were not published annually, but, rather, haphazardly, during this period. Indeed, the gazette for Sierra Leone went through a series of title changes. Gazettes published earlier in the period feature many letters and articles relating to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, to British relations with indigenous communities, and to the development of British influence throughout the region. After 1870 official notices replaced news articles and letters. The gazettes feature commentary and material relating to the course and consequences of the Napoleonic Wars, the Russo-Persian War during the 1820s, and the First World War. Read more →
