'Industrial Notes' Monthly by George Howell, 1909-1910

Collection: Trade Unionism and the Chartist Movement, 1833–1910    Volumes    'Industrial Notes' Monthly by George Howell, 1909-1910
These 'Industrial Notes' are written in a standardised monthly format suggestive of their being intended for publication in a periodical. The discussion of 'The Twelth Abstract of Labour Statistics of the United Kingdom', in particular, is written in a commentative style suggestive of addressing an intended audience; its description of improvements regarding ease of use of these statistics would be superfluous if not written for an audience. The period of these notes' composition, 1909-1910, was a time when trades were struggling, unions faced high unemployment benefit payments, and industrial disputes were not uncommon. While these items were originally grouped in sequential groups of pages from 1 to 10, their sectional format has better leant itself to a breakdown of the documents into alternative groupings. The pages have therefore been arranged by page number rather than their original sequence; the page 1's, 2's, etcetera, have been placed together in page number-based groupings, with their order dictated by the order in which they were published. This new sequence enables the easy comparison of developments in different areas over different months.
