Collection: Walt Whitman and his Fellowship of Supporters in Bolton, 1891–1913 Volumes Other correspondence
ZWN/9. This grouping contains a variety of items from numerous people who had connections to Walt Whitman or one of his groups two principle circles of followers. Correspondents include public figures such as J. Keir Hardie, J. Ramsay MacDonald and the author G. W. Russell; however, it also includes letters from those who were closer to Whitman such as Dr R. M. Bucke and John Burroughs. A core theme of this correspondence is the final days of key figures including Whitman, Horace Traubel and J. W. Wallace. Other themes covered include: discussion of the world wars as they unfolded; a possible Quaker influence on Whitman's work; violence in 1920's Ireland following the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty which created Northern Ireland; and Keir Hardie considering resignation from the House of Commons which he refers to as 'the great Babel'.
